What is a domain name ?
A domain name (or web address) is your unique internet address and specifies the location of your website on the internet. When you register your domain name you will usually also get a matching email address. For example:

Once you have registered your domain name it can then be made to point to your website where you can promote yourself and/or your business.

The above example domain name, can be broken down as follows...

  • .uk represents the top-level domain
  • .co represents the second-level domain, and
  • yourname represents the the third-level domain

What use is a domain name to me ?
You may already be registered with an ISP which provides you with an e-mail address and webspace free of charge. This is fine, but the address that you have to use will almost certainly contain the name of that ISP (eg. In other words, it is not an address that is personalised to you or your organisation.

When you register your own domain name however, all that all changes. You can register any available domain name, and have it uniquely identify you (click here to check availability). What are the Correct settings for Outlook Express ?

  1. Open Outlook Express.
  2. Click Tools, then Accounts.
  3. Highlight the 7serve account and click Properties.
  4. Click on the General tab and you should see the window below. In the E-mail address and Reply address boxes, enter the email address you would like to use eg.

  5. Click on the Servers tab and you should now see the window below.
    In the Incoming mail box enter:
    In the Outgoing mail box enter:
    In the Account name box, enter the username given to you by Severnserve.
    In the Password box, enter the password given to you by Severnserve.
